Dogs have a special ability. They can turn most tough toys into confetti within minutes. What separates good pet toy manufacturers from the average ones is the ability to produce toys that can withstand the wear and tear of chewers. The best way to achieve durability is rigorous testing, which is exactly what we do here at Petopia.
Why Durability Matters?
Dog owners spend their precious money on toys for their dogs. And they want to get their money’s worth. They prioritize safety, but also durability. For most pet owners, safety and durability are the two crucial factors in making a purchase.
Durable toys ensure long-term use, but they also promote sustainability. Made from natural rubber, Petopia’s toys are environmentally friendly, a key trend in the pet toys market. Looking into the future, companies will have to be green-conscious, because that is what clients are looking for. People are more and more environmentally aware.
Durable toys are built to last, making them a great investment. Unlike disposable and easy-to-break alternatives, durable toys can last for weeks, months, or even years with proper usage. Let’s be honest, if you leave your dog to continuously chew on a toy for several hours, no dog toy will withstand that.
The secret to producing long-lasting toys lies in the design and testing. Proper design, one that is in accordance with the chewing styles of dogs, combined with rigorous testing, can deliver a toy that will make both customers and companies happy.
Understanding Durability
When we talk about durable dog toys, the material is everything. The most durable toys are made from tough rubber, such as natural rubber. Manufacturing techniques play a significant role as well, and that is where we can distinguish a good company from an average one. High-quality durable toys feature double-stitched seams and multi-layered construction, preventing easy tearing. Some companies design toys with minimal stuffing, reducing the risk of a mess once your dog gets through the outer layers.
Size matters in everything, and the same applies to dog toys. The size of the toy should match the size of your dog. One of the biggest mistakes companies make is they market toys for large dogs, when the toy is too small for them. Or, they market toys for small dogs, but they are too big and difficult for dogs to handle. The result is the dog loses interest in the toy instantly.
How Do We Test Toys for Durability?
At Petopia, we are committed to delivering the highest quality dog toys for companies and individual customers. Testing plays a huge role in the process of manufacturing toys. Our testing process is rigorous and thorough, resulting in a toy we know can withstand heavy chewing. We understand that dogs have a natural urge to chew on things. Catering to their instinct to chew results in a happy and calm dog.
Quality check is one of the most important steps in our production. We take extra steps to ensure the quality and durability of toys. Every toy must pass the Input Process Quality Control standards of practice. After the toy passes the test, it can move into formal production. If not, we make adjustments to ensure durability. Here are two types of test we put toys to ensure quality and durability.
Simulated Dog Bite Test
We place the toy into a machine that simulates a dog playing with its toy. During the entire process, a computer records test data while we increase the speed of chewing. In the end, the data shows the maximum strength of the bite and the number of bite tests. Every toy goes through at least 10k tests before it is labeled durable for production. At the end of the test, the toy should be intact.
Stretching Dog Toys
Another test we run is stretching a dog toy to its maximum. The test shows whether the rubber used for production can withstand chewing and all the wear and tear of an active dog.
The toy is placed on a lifting machine. On the bottom end, we attach weight to see whether the toy can hold it. Yes, the toy stretches, but it is important that it holds the weight. If the test is successful, the rubber consistency can withstand the constant gnawing of pets.
What is a Durable Dog Toy?
For our final thoughts, let’s talk about what we classify as a durable dog toy. There might not be a perfect chew object a dog cannot shred. But you want the toy to provide at least a few months of entertainment. No pet owner wants to spend money out of his monthly budget on toys that last for only a few hours. Pet companies and manufacturers should have that in mind. If toys fail the durability test, their reputation will suffer.
