In August 1978, nestled in the mountains of Guizhou, China, within a coal-mining community, I, at the tender age of eight, received a little dog from a neighbor who had found her in the mountains. She had dun-colored fur and droopy little ears. Her deep black eyes stared at me, almost as if she was saying, "Hi buddy, looks like we know each other now!" I named her "Xiao Gou" (Little Dog), and from that moment on, we were inseparable. Throughout that summer vacation, whether I was doing homework or reading, she would quietly lie by my feet. We chased field mice in the freshly harvested rice paddies, her barking supportively behind me. When I climbed trees to collect bird eggs, she would anxiously howl below.
When it was time for school, she would escort me to the mid-hill stairs every day. After classes, she'd be there waiting, ready to pounce on my patched-up clothes—until one day, when her small figure was nowhere to be seen. A sense of unease washed over me as I repeatedly called out "Xiao Gou, Xiao Gou," but there was no response. It wasn't until I reached the corridor of my home that I found her collapsed on the ground, foaming at the mouth, eyes brimming with tears. She tried hard to stand but couldn't, managing only to weakly wag her tail. I cried the whole night, not eating, just holding her. The next morning, I buried her on the hillside behind our house, a moment that remains vivid to this day.
The second dog, "Barbie," was a fluffy white little thing, bought by my girlfriend after I graduated from college. She witnessed our love story unfold; my girlfriend became my wife, and one day she'll be my "old lady." When I retire, I plan to adopt another little dog. I'll accompany him as he grows up, and he'll accompany me as I grow old. Love and companionship are what we pursue in this life.
